A policeman went berserk killing two senior officers and injuring two others in Narumoru at the weekend. Martin Mutwiri Mbogo, 28, reported to work at Narumoru police station’s OB office on Saturday evening where he snatched a G3 rifle from a female colleague and started shooting everybody on sight.
Senior sergeant John Koros was the first to die after he came out of his office to find out what was happening. Mutwiri sprayed him with bullets.
The crazed officer then found deputy OCS Hudson Morang’a outside the OB office and gave him a chase upto his house where he shot him several times.
Another officer was shot in the arm and is admitted at the Nanyuki Cottage Hospital. A female officer whose rifle was used in the shooting was injured on the leg as Mutwiri seized the gun. The officer then disappeared into the darkness after abandoning the rifle at the station compound.
Over 100 police officers including GSU personnel from Karatina and Solio Ranch spent the night searching for him in Nanyuki and Narumoru towns.He was finally arrested ten hours later in Nanyuki town in a Nairobi-bound matatu and locked up at Nyeri police station.He will be charged with murder today. The G3 rifle which, was had 20 rounds of ammunition was recovered with only four.
Police said the suspect, who hails from Meru South has been working in the force for the past six years and had spent only one year at the station.
The two families were yesterday mourning the death of the two with officers at the station speaking in groups mourning for the departed ones.
Orwenyo, one of the slain officers was posted to the station last year from Mombasa. His widow Cornelia Apalat broke down to tears at the station. She said she was now left with the burden of bringing up their two children aged eight and five.
