Majority of women in Isiolo and Marsabit give birth at home.
Medical practitioners in the two counties have raised concern that more than half of expectant mothers in the region risk contracting HIV/Aids during child birth in the hands of traditional birth attendants.
According to Merti Health Centre nurse-in-charge Dimtu Guyo, most of the women prefer midwives due to low cost involved.
A visit to the area revealed that only a few women give birth at health facilities despite successfully attending anti-natal clinics.
Health workers said the mothers were only referred to hospitals in case of complications during child birth.
Dimtu said the long distances women have to cover from their villages to health centres also kept the women away.
