About 20 percent of an estimated 10 million school children are abusing alcohol and cigarettes. 12.7 percent boys and 6.5 percent girls in school are already experimenting with the alcohol and cigarettes.
This translates into around three million potential addicts in the near future. Public Health Minister Beth Mugo says it is for this reason that there are fewer boys joining high school and university.
Mugo is concerned that underage drinking is one of the causes for the increase in chronic and lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and cancer.
