Netherlands gives Sh34m to Western

The Netherlands will spend Sh34 million to support various programmes in Western Kenya, the Netherlands ambassador to Kenya, Joost Reintjes, has said.

Reintjes was speaking in Bungoma during the launch of a progamme to reduce unsafe abortions and maternal deaths in Western Kenya on Thursday.

He said his county is committed to enhancing reproductive health for women in Kenya. The programme, a partnership between Ipas Africa, is aimed at improving maternal health especially for rural women especially in rural.

Bungoma County Governor Kenneth Lusaka said county governments should pay more attention to the health of their people if they intend to achieve their development goals.

“We need a healthy county, we need healthy people if we have to implement everything else we are promising to the country. If we will have problem with health of the people, we will not be able to implement even agriculture or anything else,” said Lusaka.

He also challenged foreign governments intending to initiate development programmes in the counties to directly engage the governors.
