The Nakuru hospice will on this Saturday the 10th of May 2014 hold a charity walk aimed at raising cancer awareness and funds for its sustainability.

The Hospice Chief Executive Officer, Elizabeth Ndung’u said the walk under the theme “walk and fight the silent killer” will enable Nakuru residents familiarize themselves with the facility which started in 2009.

She said that currently over 2000 patients receive palliative care at the centre located at the walk .

The chairman of the hospice board of management Doctor Timothy Olweny said that the initiative is also aimed at fostering community participation which he said can be in form of cash or in kind.

Doctor Olweny pointed out that embracing of western lifestyles was one of the contributing factors for cancer adding that the medical fraternity has a great challenge in creating awareness to help in the early detection or prevention of the spread of cancer.

The weekend function will be officiated by Nakuru governor’s wife Lucia Kinuthia. Several other corporate have also confirmed sponsorship.
