State launches diabetes screening

A countrywide diabetic education and screening campaign was launched yesterday to curb prevalence of the lifestyle disease.

The screening by the Ministry of Health Kenya Diabetes Management and pharmaceutical firm, Merck Serono, is expected to run till end of November to increase visibility and priority accorded to diabetes and other non-communicable diseases.

In Nairobi, free screening and education will be offered at the Ministry of Health headquarters, Kenya Diabetes Management and Information Centre in Hurlingham, and Kamiti Maximum Prison.

Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia called for collaboration among stakeholders at the national and county level to address challenges such as cost and accessibility to diabetes drugs. “The cost of managing diabetes is enormous and places a huge burden on the healthcare system,” Mr Macharia said at a briefing to mark World Diabetes Day.
